Volunteer at our cultural events

At the Global Lounge we deliver a huge range of term-time cultural activities for students and staff to celebrate our diversity, experience something new, learn about other cultures and meet people from all around the world. We think it is important that our events are authentic, engaging and educational for the whole University of Bristol community.

To ensure we are delivering our events authentically, we are looking for volunteers who can share their own cultural experiences to make activities, decorations and presentations as accurate to the culture as possible.

We have the following upcoming event opportunities for volunteers:

  • German Culture Day: Octoberfest Celebrations – Thursday 10 October, 5 to 7 pm
  • Korean Culture Day – Thursday 17 October, 5 to 7 pm
  • Diwali – Thursday 31 October, 5 to 7 pm
  • South American Cultural Celebration – Thursday 7 November, 5 to 7 pm
  • Thai Culture Day: Yi Peng Lantern Festival – Thursday 14 November, 5 to 7 pm
  • Kenyan Culture Day – Thursday 21 November, 5 to 7 pm

For these events, we are looking for volunteers who:

  • Are of the nationality of the culture being celebrated and/or
  • Have significant links to the culture being celebrated and/or
  • Have a significant understanding of the culture being celebrated

We don’t expect you to be a representative or an expert for the whole culture but to share with us your own experience of it, what you find most interesting, what in your opinion others should know about it – we simply want to work with you to enable you to share your vision of your culture with our community.

  • As a volunteer, we would be asking for your support to:

  • Help create a presentation about your culture/particular subject
  • Suggest activities we could run in the Global Lounge
  • Help us choose appropriate decorations and snacks
  • If you are available, come to the event to assist with delivering our activities and presentation

If you have questions about volunteering for our events, please email us at global-lounge@bristol.ac.uk.

  • Applying to be a volunteer at our events is a great way to develop experience:

  • Organising and managing events with expert input from the Global Lounge Team
  • Develop your presentation skills
  • Develop your ability to plan and deliver events
  • Learn how to engage and interact with event attendees

In addition to this, hours volunteering with the team count towards the Bristol Plus Award giving formal recognition to your extracurricular work on your degree certificate. An example of the hours you could build from volunteering is:

  • 2-4 hours assisting with planning
  • 1-2 hours making a presentation
  • 4 hours of event delivery

If you want more information on the Bristol Plus Award you can contact the team on careers-plusaward@bristol.ac.uk.
