Come dine with us at the Open Iftar!

We are delighted to invite Muslim and non-Muslim members of the University community to celebrate and learn about Ramadan at the Open Iftar.

This event is taking place on Thursday 28 April at the Great Hall in Wills Memorial Building, and is open to all students and staff.

This free event offers a fantastic opportunity to widen your understanding about Ramadan, while respecting the Ramadan tradition of sharing food after sunset.

The Open Iftar will include keynote speakers, a prayer for Muslim guests, and a wonderful free dinner for all event attendees.

This event will start from 7 pm and is open to all students and staff from different ethnicities, all faiths and none.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islam. Muslims observe the month of Ramadan by fasting (not eating or drinking during the hours of daylight) and paying special attention to their charity-giving and helping others.

What is Iftar?

Iftar is the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during the month of Ramadan. It is the second meal of the day, and literally means ‘breakfast’ (to break the day’s fast).

This event has been jointly organised by Hiba Abdo, Student Inclusion Team, Global Lounge, University of Bristol Islamic Society, Bristol Ahlul Bayt Islamic Society, and our community partner Afzal Shah. It follows our previous events Ramadan Kareem 2020: Celebrate and Learn and Virtual Iftar 2021 – come dine with us!
